JCSD and LPD host fallen officer memorial

LAUREL, MS. - Jones County Sheriff's Department (JCSD) and Laurel Police are one of the many departments across the country honoring fallen law enforcement officials Monday.

Jones County Board President declared today as 'National Peace Officer Memorial' day.

Law enforcement officials and families attended the memorial to honor the service of those who have died in the line of duty

The guest speaker of the service is Mississippi Highway Patrol's Lieutenant (Lt.) Trea Staples who nearly lost his life in 2016 during a hostage situation.

Staples said, "Well when people hear firsthand to someone that it has happened too. Especially someone where one of my own teammates was killed in the accident. It really puts a personal perspective on them."

He added, "And in my opinion its more touching to hear it coming from someone that was there and affected first hand.”

Staples said today is not just a day to honor law enforcement officers, but all first responders too.
