National Children Vision and Learning month
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - It is National Children Vision and Learning month.
Officials said ¼ kids have an undiagnosed visual problem. And there are over a dozen visual skills needed for a child to read efficiently.
Optometrist, Dr. Megan Sumrall Lott said, "Typically when screenings are done, about half of the children that actually need correction get missed. Because on a screening, the child covers one eye at a time and they're reading a chart at a distance. However, in the classroom, most of their work is actually done up close or at near at their desk: whether it's on the computer or through a textbook. So a lot of times children might need a pair of reading glasses just to help them accommodate a little bit better up close."
