Southern Miss defeats Southern, 45-0; Coach Hopson remains unbeaten against the Jaguars
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Golden Eagles played the Southern Jaguars at home Saturday, and were looking to bounce back from their previous loss to Kentucky and get their first win of the season.
“We know they’re a good football team. Our guys I thought came out and played hard. I really thought we made plays early. I thought that was a good thing,” said head coach, Jay Hopson.
The Golden Eagles recovered a muffed punt from Southern in the end zone, which gave them their first touchdown of the game and momentum for the rest of the night.
“Any time you get a play on special teams or defense or whatever, you get kind of a bonus play. That always helps. But I thought pretty much for the whole game, our guys kept their intensity,” said Hopson.
Southern Miss forced a total of four turnovers, which included a pick 6.
“We can make a lot of plays upfront. And I feel like it’ll open up some doors for our corners and safeties so they can turnover the ball,” said defensive end, Jacques Turner.
It wasn’t just the defense that was ballin’. The offense had a total of 477 yards. Quarterback, Kwadra Griggs completed 65% of his passes, threw for over 200 yards, and had two touchdown passes as well.
“Just get the ball to the open man. That’s what my coach always tell me. Just going through the process of going through my reads, and try to put the ball in my playmakers hands. We got a lot of playmakers,” said Griggs.
The Golden Eagles definitely had a lot of playmakers, which enabled them to shut out the Jaguars, 45-0. And this win, extended Coach Hopson’s coaching record against Southern to (6-0).
