Southern Miss invites law schools to recruit students

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - University of Southern Mississippi hosted a law school fair Wednesday afternoon at the Hattiesburg campus.

The law school fair is apart of Southern Miss' annual 'Pre-Law Week' hosted by the Department of Political Science, International Development and International Affairs.

Law schools from across the Southeastern region of the country, visited Southern Miss to recruit and inform students about their law programs.

“As they speak to the admission groups coming from the law schools, they learn what qualities the law schools are looking for,” said Mike Lavender, Director of Legal Studies.

One senior student, Keionna Harmon, said she wants to help young people in the U.S. criminal system. “When I graduate ultimately I want to be a prosecutor in juvenile youth court,” said Harmon.

Harmon has a 3.7 GPA with a desire to change her community for the better of others and her daughter. “If I could just change a small fraction in my community to make it better for her, if I can do it then I will,"

Assistant Director of Admission at Faulkner School of Law, Alyssa Taylor, said her goal is to encourage and inform students about the importance of scholarships and passing the LSAT. “If someone is willing to put in three to six months time and really work really hard every single day to prepare for that test, then chance are they are going to do very well on it. And so that’s also going to translate into the scholarship opportunities that are out there,” said Taylor.

Southern Miss plans to host another fair in the future. Harmon is scheduled to graduate in May 2018.
