Southern Miss Television Suite named after NBC's Chuck Scarborough

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi named College Hall's Television Suite after alumnus Chuck Scarborough Monday.

The Television Studio Suite now carries that name of Emmy award winning NBC anchor and correspondent and Southern Miss Class of 1969 Alumnus, Charles 'Chuck' Scarborough.

“This institution was really important to me. This is where I would build my foundation for the career that would take me within five years of leaving here to New York city. This where I learned the basics of good honest solid journalism,” said Scarborough.

His donation helps talented students like Danielle Willis, who has won two awards and participated in broadcast related programs.

“I would say, for sure this helps me get that on air experience and that camera time, to make me feel more comfortable being in front of a camera. I am truly grateful for all of the tools that we do have here." said Willis

Today, students are able to use control and studio tools to execute daily newscasts with over $75,000 worth of equipment.

“What this gift allows is for us to have equipment for the students to work on, that enables them to go immediately into the workforce having learned on equipment very similar to what they’ll use in the work place,” said Director of School of Mass Communications and Journalism, David Davies.

Scarborough said we live in a time when agenda free journalism is needed more than ever, " Journalism is fair, journalism doesn’t try to accomplish something other than tell the truth,”

He stated in the end, journalism programs like USM's is absolutely vital to produce honest fair journalists for the survival of democracy.
