Halloween Safety Tips

HATTIESBURG, MISS - "We want everybody to have a good time, but don't forget their adult responsibilities," Laurel Police Department's, Captain, Tommy Cox said.

Laurel's Police Department encourages residents to think before they act tonight. Whether it is about getting behind the wheel, and anything else.

"You know, don't overdo it. If you had anything to drink, don't get behind the wheel," Cox said. "It's a lot of money if you get a DUI, and it's more money if you run over somebody."

Statistics show that children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than they are on any other day of the year. Captain Cox says a lot of Halloween tragedies can be avoided by taking one small step.

"You know just be aware," Cox said. "I always tell especially the ladies... they feel more comfortable if they have a couple of other ladies or gentlemen with them, so travel in groups."

Also, if you happened to leave your drink unattended in the bar.

"I would say if it looks different from when you left it or something doesn't taste right... throw that out," Cox said. "You may also let one of your friends know something didn't taste right too."

Most of all, Cox says people need to be responsible.

"The basics are always the basics., whether it's Christmas, Halloween, or whatever," Cox said. "Keep that in mind, and have a good time and be responsible."
