HATTIESBURG, MISS. - The Longleaf Trace trail in Hattiesburg is about to get even longer. Friday, Mayor Toby Barker announced the beginning of construction for the Longleaf Trace extension. The project will connect the trail to Chain Park. “Well today, we are announcing the beginning of construction on the Longleaf Trace. This will run from the Train Depot all the to Chain Park by way of Buschman Street,” Barker said. “Longleaf Trace is one of the longer trails in Mississippi, if not the longest. With the addition of this .85 miles, it'll be just over 44 miles long, from starts in Prentiss to Chain Park. So, this is a real accomplishment once this gets built. Hopefully, it's just the start of more connectivity in our city. Our goal is for all neighborhood and pathways to lead to the trace, so no matter where you live in Hattiesburg there is a way to get here, either on your bike or by foot. Whatever way you want to go.” The new expansion is expected to make Longleaf Trace the longest trail in Mississippi.
