Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Proclamation

HATTIESBURG, MISS. – Monday morning, Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee joined letter carriers in the fight to stop hunger. Saturday, May 12 marks the 26th anniversary since the "National Association of Letter Carriers" started their "Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive." “Well each carrier here in the city of Laurel and also in our rural areas, carriers will be collecting cans from the customers,” City carrier assistant for the Laurel Post Office, Demetria Pittman said. “If they [residents] place a non-perishable item in their mailbox… we'll be collecting them Saturday, May 12.” Last year, letter carriers collected over 75 million pounds of food nationally, feeding an estimated 64 million people. Over the course its 25-year history, the drive collected approximately 1.6 billion pounds of food, including Puerto Rico, Guam and U.S. Virgin Islands.
