Summer Feeding Program
LAUREL, MISS. – Many kids look forward to the summer break, a time period that’s school and homework free. However, a lot of kids across the Pine Belt depend on their school for lunch, and without the help of their school, a lot of kids would not be able to eat lunch.

According to statistics, more than 13 million children go to school hungry, not knowing where their next meal will come from. Also, 20 percent of children live in a household that lacks access to a consistent amount of food, which is the reason why the Laurel Housing Authority launched their “Summer Feeding” program.
“I think what's unique about the program is not only do we get an opportunity to provide nutritional meals to kids, but we also provide activities surrounding the meal to enhance their summer,” Executive Director for the Housing Authority, Ailrick Young said. “[We do] reading programs and other activities.” The program feeds kids ages 18-years-old and younger free meals, no I.D. or proof residence required.
