Police Charge Victim's Ex-Boyfriend with Capital Murder and More Details are Starting to Unfold


HATTIESBURG, MISS. - The Hattiesburg Police Department provides more information about the death of a 25-year-old mother of two, Falisa Carter.

“On April 24th, Demarcus McGruder’s charge was upgraded to capital murder,” Captain Branden McLemore from the Hattiesburg Police Department said.

Police originally arrested McGruder on a kidnapping charge, and now he faces capital murder for the death of his ex-girlfriend Falisa Carter, whose body was found in a wooded area off of J.C. Bryant Road in Hattiesburg.

“As stated there was a relationship,” McLemore said. “In a domestic relationship, anything is possible.”

Authorities acknowledged the relationship between Carter and McGruder but did not mention exactly what lead to Carter’s death. In the investigation, law enforcement made a second arrest March 1, detaining 29-year-old Timothy Evans for “accessory after the fact to kidnapping.”

“As of right now, He’s just looking at accessory after the fact [to kidnapping],” McLemore said. “As it goes to the grand jury there might be other indictments and other people indicted for it as well.”

The case remains open for more suspects to prosecuted,however, the cause of death is still not known.

“Due to the way the remains were recovered that is still pending,” McLemore said. “The final autopsy still has not been concluded.”

McGruder remains behind bars in the Forrest County Jail without bond and will make his initial court appearance April 26 at1:30 p.m. According to HPD, McGruder has not made a comment about the capital murder charge facing him.
