MDOT Participates in 2015 Hurricane Preparedness Week

Jackson, MS - With Hurricane Season officially starting June 1 and Gov. Phil Bryant declaring May 25–29 Hurricane Preparedness Week, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) reminds residents now is the time to prepare for tropical weather.

The first step in preparing for Hurricane Season is to have a plan of action. Waiting until the storm system is on its way is too late, but MDOT has you covered.

“In the 10th year after Hurricane Katrina, we are reminded on the importance to prepare and evacuate early, and we ask residents to start getting prepared now, ahead of the official start of Hurricane Season,” said MDOT Executive Director Melinda McGrath. “With so many things to think about when the storm is officially on its way, it is critical to start getting your plan together now.”

The 2015 Hurricane Evacuation Guide features a wide range of useful information such as an evacuation map, suggested evacuation routes, contraflow information, radio coverage areas through Mississippi Public Broadcasting, and important contact information from the Mississippi Highway Patrol, American Red Cross, MEMA and DOTs and Highway Patrols in bordering states. You will also find vital resources on shelters for you and your pets, 211 MS, lodging and much more.
