One local church serves on Thanksgiving day
HATTIESBURG, Miss - Mount Carmel Church was one of the only churches open to hand out free meals on Thanksgiving Day.
Melvin Lumzy volunteer says, "Most people, a lot of people in this area do not have families. They have families, but somehow they are not connected with their families at the time, so we really want to help people out and let them be part of something on Thanksgiving."
Feeding America says that 48.1 million Americans live in food insecure households and Minister Laura Posey is happy to serve those she can.
"It's a blessing, the Lord tells us to be a blessing to others, and so that's what we do, we make it our business to give a tenth of our time to feed someone else to bless someone else" Posey says.
Mt. Carmel Church even goes the extra mile with the leftovers. Lumzy mentions, "We may fix 200 plates depends on how much we have left, and we fix plates, and we load the cars and we drive around and see people in the community and just give them food."
Laura says she plans on serving a couple of hundred plates this year.
"Because one church can't do it all, and we are all the body of Christ."
Today those who were hungry were fed, this is the third year that Mt. Carmel is giving back to the community and plans to do so for the next years to come.
