Selective service director encourages registration for males

HATTIESBURG, Miss - Lawrence G. Romo director of the Selective Service for the U.S. visits Mississippi to discuss with Mississippians the low registration compliance rates of 18-25 year old males.

According to the Selective Service System there are only four counties in Mississippi that have an 80% - 89% registration rate.

The counties are Forrest, Lawrence, Carroll and Montgomery.

Romo says, "We want to make sure that we increase the compliance rate in Mississippi. I think a lot of it is just that the young men are not aware and the procrastinate. We want to make sure in MIssissippi they protect their rights. We tell the Mississippians here that 'yes it is important to register when they are 18' plus we want to make sure the draft is fair and equitable."

All other counties in the state of Mississippi show a 79% and lower registration rate. Romo's goal this week is to visit Mississippi counties to ensure males understand the benefits of registering for the service.
