Burn advisory in Jones county

JONES COUNTY, Miss - This is a press release from the Jones County Fire Coordinator.

Dry conditions, low humidity and increasing northwest winds will make outdoor burning in Jones County inadvisable on Monday and Tuesday. The weather forecast calls for wind speeds to increase to 20-25 miles per hour during the day on Monday with higher gusts possible. Rapid and erratic fire spread can be expected with any fire that gets out of control.

“We are advising Jones County residents to defer any plans for conducting outdoor burning until winds subside later in the week,” notes Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna. He adds, “With the wind speeds expected, any outdoor fire has the potential to get out of control, grow quickly in size and overwhelm attempts by residents to extinguish the blaze. Residents should immediately dial 911 to report any out of control grass or woods fire so that our volunteer fire departments can be dispatched to respond to the threat."

There is not a Burn Ban in effect in Jones County at this time. Weather conditions are forecast to be dry for the next seven days which will only enhance the potential for out of control grass and brush fires.
