City Council approves HPSD's new board member

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The City Council members voted 4-0 Tuesday and approved Mayor Dupree's nomination of Carey Varnado as one of Hattiesburg Public School District's (HPSD) new board member.

Director of Communications at HPSD, Jas N Smith, said, "We are very excited for a new board member to be coming on in a period of transition right now."

According to Smith Varnado has worked in the legal system, which Smith believes can benefit the board.

"To have him and bring his unique set of skills as I understand, he is very familiar with the law and legal system, so that's a piece the board has not had a member recently."

Varnado is filling the school board's vacant position following Mary Williams' resignation early April.

He will start his new position May 3.
