Jones county emergency responders hosts mock car accident

JONES COUNTY, Miss. - The seniors and juniors at Northeast Jones High School experienced a dramatic car demonstration before their prom night.

The Jones county volunteer firefighters and sheriff's department reenacted a real life scene of a tragic drunk driving car accident that involved their high school classmates.

The goal was to teach students the hazardous effects of drinking, texting while driving.

Senior Hannah Beech said, "It was a very good interpretation of what needed to be shows to the kids so they would realize that this not the kind of accident you want to be in."

Junior Austin McCormick played the role as one of the victims with serious injuries.

"I know it was a demonstration, but I was scared, my heart was beating" said McCormick.

During the scene, Rebeca Yarnell played a mother and was crying as she rushed to check on Hannah's status.

She said, "There's so many parents, so many moms, so many dads, so many families, who have seen this, this is real, this happens."

Northeast Jones high school experienced a tragic accident similar to this last year.

Principal Cooper Pope said, "In this business I have been doing this for several years now and its happened more than 2 or 3 times, it stays with you. There are still moments in your life that you still mourn that."

The message to drive safely is important to the emergency responders that most of them used vacation days to get the point across.

Lance Chancellor with the Jones county Fire Rescue department said, "They feel that strong enough to be here, to make sure that these students see what we do and see what the result can be from making that bad decision."

The CDC reports, drinking and driving among teens in high school has gone down by 54% since 1991.
