Swimming trip leaves one man dead

JONES COUNTY, Miss. - A swimming trip turned ugly over the weekend, leaving one man dead.

Authorities said several fire departments arrived on scene at Boney Road and were approached by three individuals. The three individuals told officials that their friend climbed a tree that sat near the water's edge and jumped in, but he did not resurface.

The three friends grabbed the victim and attempted to pull him from the murky water, but the edge of the swimming hole was too slippery and the victim slid further into the water.

His friends failed to pull him out of the water, so a couple of them dove in to look for him, but could not find him. The third friend ran to find help, but when responding units arrived, it was too late.

Later that evening, the Jones County Dive Team located the victim and removed his body from the water.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
