Former Mayor of Laurel, gets sportsplex named after her

LAUREL, Miss. - The City of Laurel made a change to the city's sportsplex, one that has been a long time coming.

Mayor of Laurel, Johnny Magee said, "We are dedicating the Laurel Sportsplex to Mayor Susan Vincent. She was the one that came up with the idea. She was the one that saw it through and it's over 20 years old. Her name is being memorialized today because this was her dream, her vision."

In 1999, the sportsplex had its first ball game, and 17 years later, its still touching people's hearts.

Former Mayor of Laurel, Susan Vincent said, "It's very heart-warming to have the vision of building this and see its completion and its use. It's a real honor to have my name on it."

The facility has come a long way.

"When I ride out here at night and the fields are filled with baseball players, soccer players, tennis players, the pool is full of people, it's just the right place to be and the fun place to be, and that's what I wanted it to be for the people of Laurel and Jones County, and the surrounding area," said Vincent.

The sportsplex will host a 25-team World Series and will also add an eight-plex softball field soon.
