Fireworks safety

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Fireworks are banned inside the city.

People who are doing fireworks may need to be aware of some of the dangers associated with lighting fireworks as well as some of the legal aspects.

Hattiesburg Police Officer, Lt. Jon Traxler said, "We just want to remind everybody the safety reasons behind it is because you have the situation of the houses are so close together and there's a chance of a house catching fire or bottle rockets, something like that flying over to a neighbor's yard, hitting another child over there, and somebody getting hurt. So, if you are wanting to shoot fireworks or enjoy the festivities, take it outside the city, get a big open area where you're able to shoot them and not have people close by."

Traxler said if people are caught inside the city doing fireworks, they will receive a ticket, have their fireworks taken away, and could possibly spend the night in jail.
