House fire destroys kitchen

|Caleb Worrell, Jones County Fire Council

JONES COUNTY, Miss. - Wednesday morning, Shady Grove Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a home on Odessa Drive that reportedly had smoke showing, but no visible flames. Upon arrival, it became immediately evident that a section in the middle of the home was on fire. With very few firefighters on scene, Shady Grove Chief David Houston immediately called for the assistance of manpower from neighboring volunteer fire departments. Even after the request was made, there was still a limited number of available personnel to respond to the fire, due in part to many of Jones County Volunteer Firefighters work during daytime hours, further insisting the need for more willing, able and available men and women to join the volunteer fire service.

After making forced entry through the front and rear doors to the home, firefighters found the fire in the kitchen area and quickly extinguished the blaze. The kitchen was completely destroyed and part of the living room area had fire damage. The rest of the home sustained heavy smoke and some water damage.
