JONES COUNTY, Miss. - A two vehicle accident Monday afternoon left one person critically injured. At around 2:40 p.m., Calhoun and Pleasant Ridge Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene of the accident on Highway 84 West eastbound near the intersection of 84 West and Highway 28; two Powers volunteers were nearby when the accident occurred and also responded. Responding units were initially advised that there may have been entrapment but it was later confirmed that emergency responders were able to free the driver through the passenger door without the use of extrication tools.

When units arrived on scene, they found a white car to the side of the eastbound lanes on Highway 84 West with extensive damage to its driver's side and a red F-250 truck with damage to its front-end on the opposite side of the eastbound lanes. According to reports, the driver of the white car was critically injured and transported by EMServ ambulance to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel. She was then transported to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg for treatment due to the severity of her injuries. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and refused transport to the hospital.

One lane of the highway was shutdown for emergency vehicles and vehicle recovery. The cause of the accident is unknown.
