U.S. Senator Roger Wicker says 'Comey needed to go a long time ago'

PINE BELT, MS. - United States Senator Republican Roger Wicker for Mississippi told FOX 23 his thoughts about recent movements in Washington after President Donald Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey last week.

Senator Wicker told FOX 23 Comey should have left sooner.

"Mr. Comey needed to go, I think he needed to go a long time ago." Senator Wicker said he thinks former Senator Joe Lieberman will do a better job than Comey.

“I thought that Mr. Comey had made some, very serious mistakes, not in recent days but overtime" he said

He added, "As far as the memo by the Deputy Attorney General I thought it was right on point and on balance."

Senator Wicker said Lieberman is a candidate that has been bipartisan during his political career and has been honest, especially on national security and law enforcement issues.

Senator Wicker said he hopes President Trump makes the right decision on appointing the next FBI Director.

"But the point I make is, that it is very important that the President appoints someone that has the stature of like a Judge Gorsuch.”
