PRCC adds new bike program

POPLARVILLE, Miss. - Many Pearl River Community College (PRCC) students registered for classes Thursday.

Faculty and staff members were excited to see students back on campus for the start of PRCC's 110th year.

"The enrollment is kind of holding steady with last year, which is very encouraging considering all of our factors. And, so, we're just really excited to see new students come in the door," said Martha Smith, Vice President of Poplarville campus.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation gave a grant to PRCC, which enabled the Wildcats to purchase 72 bikes.

"The whole purpose of this grant is to encourage a healthy culture here on campus. And we want people to be riding their bicycles to campus, not their vehicles," said Director of Wellness Center, Dr. Tara Rouse.

Students and faculty members who are members of the Wellness Center can use the bikes at any time.

"They're definitely well-used. They have really enjoyed it. They come for fun. They don't think of it as exercise. They really have enjoyed using it," said Rouse.

A bike lane will be added on campus by December.
