JCJC collects items for Hurricane Harvey victims

ELLISVILLE, Miss. - Hurricane Harvey has claimed the lives of 45 people, and has displaced many families.

JCJC decided to take action Friday, and start collecting non-perishable items, bottles of water, and personal hygiene products for those in Houston who are in need.

"It really embodies what we do here as a community college. If you think about it, a couple of years ago when (Hurricane) Katrina hit, we were helped out. People from all over the world donated for us. And now it's our turn to give it back and teach our kids what community is about," said Vice President of Marketing, Finee Ruffin.

200 JCJC students have already helped out and donated items for storm victims.

"I think it shows you what the generation that's coming behind us really feel community is important. And they really feel like giving back is really a part of who they are. So, I think it defines what this generation is going to bring to the table," said Ruffin.

"We've always been kind of perceived as self-absorbed young people. But, I think today we're proving that we're so much more than that. We're here today just strictly to help and show our love and compassion for our brothers and sisters in the Houston area," said student, Alexus Hickson.

JCJC is encouraging the entire Jones County community and the Pine Belt to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

JCJC will be accepting donations until 10 a.m. on Monday.
