Traffic stuck on US Highway 49 due to icy roads

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Trucks and cars sat idle on US Highway 49 South due to icy road conditions Wednesday morning.

“We got here about 8:30. Trucks and cars stuck all on the highway. This truck actually has been backing up for about two hours," said US Highway 49 McDonald's General Manager, Michelle Green.

Vehicles slid backwards unable to accelerate out of the ice and snow.

“I had an employee that was stuck in the middle of the highway. We walked down the hill, pushed him out the way so that he can actually pull up here and park,”

A few drivers pulled off the road, sat inside McDonald's to wait for the ice to melt.

“...because their vehicles are stuck out here. So they are sitting in the store because their vehicles are stuck and they really don’t have any place else to go.”

MDOT workers and first repsonders continue to work tirelessly to get drivers out of the ice and back on the road safely.
