Mayor Barker Proclaims May as Speech and Hearing Month in Hattiesburg

This press release comes from the University of Southern Miss.

HATTIESBURG, MISS. - Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker read from a special proclamation at The University of Southern Mississippi earlier today, declaring May as Speech and Hearing Month in the city. May is also designated as National Speech and Hearing Month.

Barker made the proclamation at the University’s J.B. George Building, home to USM’s Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences as well as The Children’s Center for Communication and Development.

In part, the proclamation read: “Whereas during this annual observance, we should focus our attention on the needs of our citizens who have some form of hearing, speech or language impairment to ensure that everyone has access to the audiology and speech-language pathology treatment that will help them lead full and productive lives.”

USM is home to the state’s only Doctor of Audiology program, while also offering one of Mississippi’s top Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology Programs.
