Hattiesburg School District Teacher receives unexpected surprise

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - A Hattiesburg Public School District (HPSD) teacher received an unexpected surprise from one Walmart manager. Rowan Elementary 4th grade math and science teacher, Janie Brown, received a $490 gift card from Walmart Thursday morning.

Brown was nominated through Walmart's online "Commander in the Classroom" contest.

Brown said, "I had no idea, no one said anything..nobody, I am still in shock, I am shaken."

Walmart found on average teachers spend $490 each year out of their own pocket to supply their classrooms.

Walmart Manager on U.S. Highway 49 Bill Bellows said, "Well because they are integral part of the community, they are teaching our kids each and every day, they have powerful influences over them."

Rowan Principal Donna Scott said she is excited for Brown. "It gives them an opportunity to know that we care about them" said Scott.

She added, "Often times teachers do so many things that people do not realize they do."

Brown said the last time she was recognized for her efforts was 8 years ago.

"I am just pleased, it makes me feel really good" said Brown. Brown said she will use the money to help purchase an electronic tablet for her classroom.
