“National Voter Registration Day"

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - “National Voter Registration Day” is Wednesday and there has been a big uptick in people registering as it gets closer to election day.

Forrest County Circuit Clerk, Gwen Wilks said, "I think registering to vote and voting is probably the highest privilege that we're honored to do. You know a lot of younger people don't understand that privilege in what some people went to get us there."

One Southern Miss student is dedicated to helping people register to vote.

Student, Marshieon Lemon said, "I believe it's important for college kids to vote, because we are the new generation coming up, and we're shaping what America is going to be."

This presidential election is unlike others in the past, thanks to social media.

"Social media is really large in their lives. It is even large in older people's lives. So I think social media is huge in getting the word out," said Wilks.

People have until October 8 to register to vote.

"If you don't speak your mind when it's time, then your right to speak is gone. You missed your chance," said Wilks.

The election is November 8.
