HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Students in the School of Kinesiology at The University of Southern Mississippi hosted their annual RecFest event Oct. 12 at Chain Park in Hattiesburg.

Senior therapeutic recreation majors are responsible for organizing and facilitating RecFest. The seniors lead junior and sophomore recreation majors through a series of team building and communication activities.

“Our whole purpose is to improve people’s quality of life,” said Rhea Phillips Valentine, senior therapeutic recreation major and director of RecFest. “We also want to learn leadership skills and how to communicate with each other. RecFest gives us this opportunity.”

Dr. Rick Green, a recreation professor, said RecFest is an outlet for senior therapeutic recreation students to apply what they learn in the classroom.

“As recreational therapists, our seniors will inevitably be leading groups,” said Green. “Here, they can practice and apply their skills in a safe environment.”

Classmate bonding is another essential element of the event. “We come away from RecFest knowing each other a lot better than we would just sitting in the classroom,” Valentine said. “It gets people excited about the major and for the future.”
