Man Sustains Injuries Saving Dogs From Burning House

JONES COUNTY, Miss. - This is a press release from Jones County Volunteer Fire Department.

Another home in Jones County has caught fire, leaving one man injured and a family homeless. Tuesday evening, units from Glade, Powers, Ovett, M&M and Sandersville Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene of the fully involved house fire on George Boutwell Road near the Glade community. When firefighters arrived on scene, they advised heavy smoke and fire visible from all angles of the home. Firefighters were also advised while en route to the fire that someone was inside the home attempting to rescue trapped dogs.

According to reports, the man had exited the home on his own before firefighters arrived, but he sustained what was believed to be severe but non-life threatening burns. He was initially assessed and treated on scene by a Glade Emergency Medical Responder and later transported by EMServ ambulance to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel for further treatment of his injuries. A helicopter ambulance was requested to the scene but medics with EMServ canceled the request and chose to transport the victim by ground ambulance. Updated reports state that the victim is in stable condition and is to be released from the hospital.

Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control after about an hour of fire suppression, but not before the front porch completely collapsed. Firefighters were on scene for nearly three hours fighting the fire and performing overhaul. A section of the road in front of and near the home was completely shutdown for emergency vehicles. A portion of Highway 15 South was also briefly shutdown to prepare a landing zone for the helicopter.

Emergency personnel on scene included Glade, Powers, Ovett, M&M and Sandersville Volunteer Fire Departments, Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna, EMServ Ambulance Service, Jones County Sheriff's Department and Jones County Fire Public Information Officer Caleb Worrell. Dixie Electric was also called to the scene to disconnect power to the house.

Fire apparatus included Glade Engine and Tanker; Powers Engine, Tanker and Heavy Rescue; Ovett Tanker; and M&M Tanker.
