Woods Fire Threatens, Burns Structure

JONES COUNTY, Miss. - This is a press release from the Jones County Volunteer Fire Department.

A woods fire in the Powers community on Monday threatened several structures and destroyed one. At 1:45 p.m., units from Powers and M&M Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene of the woods fire on Highway 184 near Dixie Electric.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a large brush pile that had been burning and spread into nearby woods, approaching dangerously close to nearby structures and homes.

The first units on scene acted quickly to suppress flames that were creeping up the side and onto the roof of a large shed, saving that structure. However, before units arrived, another smaller shed had already been consumed by flames and completely destroyed.

A nearby home was threatened by the encroaching fire, but firefighters used protection suppression techniques to prevent the fire from getting any closer to the home, effectively stopping a potential disaster.

Emergency personnel on scene included Powers and M&M Volunteer Fire Departments and Jones County Fire Public Information Officer Caleb Worrell.

A Sandersville firefighter was also in the area and responded.

Fire apparatus included Powers Brush, Engine and Tanker; M&M Rescue and Tanker.
