MDOT encourages safe driving during Super Bowl weekend

PINE BELT, Miss. - The following is a press release from Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT).

Every quarterback needs a lineman to help him make it to the end zone safely. Every fan that has a drink needs a designated driver to help him or her make it home safely.

If you plan to drink this Super Bowl weekend, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) encourages you to know who your designated driver is before you celebrate. If you are a designated driver, take pride in your role and help your friends get home safely by not having a drink.

“Alcohol-related crashes are a major issue, but they are completely preventable,” said MDOT Executive Director Melinda McGrath. “We want people to remember that planning a safe way home before they begin to drink or arrive at a party can significantly reduce the potential to drink and drive.”

In 2015, over 950 people were killed due to alcohol-related crashes in Mississippi. You can help prevent an alcohol-related crash by not getting behind the wheel if you have had a drink. If you decide to drink this weekend, either stay where you are or arrange a way to get home safely that does not involve driving while intoxicated.

Make sure this Super Bowl experience ends on a good note. No matter the outcome of the game, MDOT wants the outcome of your night to be a safe one.

Local law enforcement will be out on the roads to help keep you safe, but we need your help to ensure that alcohol-related incidents are prevented by not drinking and driving.

MDOT wants you to enjoy your Super Bowl party. When it comes to safety, we are all on the same team. Plan ahead, and do your part in keeping everyone safe this weekend.
