Hundreds of people participate in Golf Day for Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - More than 350 people participated in the Golf Day for Carey fundraiser.

The Hattiesburg Country Club, Canebrake Country Club, Shadow Ridge Golf Club, and Timberton Golf Club were the courses everyone played at.

Roy Jarvis, general manager of Canebrake Country Club said, "These kind of events are always a pleasure to have. You know you want to give back to the community. Everybody saw the destruction around the town and anything we could do to help out to get kids back to school and get some of their lost possessions back to them is something we want to do."

"It's just tremendous what the four golf courses of Hattiesburg has done for the student relief fund. It's just amazing. We're going to raise well over $75,000," said Dick Vogel, William Carey senior project manager.

Vogel said nearly 100 percent of the funds will go to the student relief fund.

Golfers also had a chance to win various prizes, including a Tiger Woods golf bag and a Notre Dame helmet from the 1988 National Championship, signed by former head coach, Lou Holtz.

Golfer, Herb Gee said, "We're certainty excited to support this event because of the devastation from a couple of months ago with the tornado. It's a good experience out here. It's humbling to come out here and support the event. And, we're certainty proud to do so."

Vogel also said 1/3 golfers won rounds of golf from courses all over the deep south.
