William Carey University Builds A New Theatre Building

From dirt bottom, to a brand new facility. William Carey University took a devastating blow by a tornado in January this year.

"The tornado was devastating," University president, Tommy King said.

Knocking William Carey's theatre building into the ground.

"The damages from the tornado were quite extensive to the whole university. It also damaged the theatre building. The theatre building lobby was completely destroyed," William Carey's theatre and communication chair, Keon Fuqua said. "I guess the major loss was that our department was housed at the bottom of what was the old Tatum Court, and that building has been demolished."

A building the university had for years, turning into a pile of rubble over night. However, in the midst of tragedy, this university held their faith.

Digging deep! Literally.

"You could hear the sound of heavy equipment, hammers and saws everyday as we made progress toward full recovery," King said.

Through hard work and faith, this Baptist University put their theatre program back on solid ground.

"And we're feeling so blessed and thankful for what made this possible. The great insurance settlement, as well as the wonderful continued support and contributions from the friends at Carey," Fuqua said.

"The student and employee support, and the support from the community has allowed us to come back stronger than ever," King said.
