Wayne County Historical Art Mural: Preserving the Past, Embracing the Future

WAYNESBORO, MISS - The images painted on the side of the Waynesboro-Wayne County Library are more than just pictures. These images symbolize the history of Wayne County from 1729 - 2017, and painter Tim Johnson said he enjoyed every stroke of painting Wayne County's historical art mural."It was totally enjoyable from the first brush stroke to the last," Johnson said. "I have people coming to me,

pointing out things on the mural saying to me that's my grandfather, he used to do that... or they would say, I remember that and they would tell me a story. It is really nice to know that I was jogging memories back of older citizens, and I think as a historical mural that's what it's supposed to do. Bring people's memories and history of the county back."

Director of the Waynesboro-Wayne County library, Patsy Brewer says this historical mural is not just a form of art, but it is also a teaching tool. "It's very important, especially for future generations because as the children come from school and we give a library tour, we will bring them over to see the mural and we will go through the history of the county," Brewer said. "Many people who do not know the history of the county, can now visually see the history and learn more about it."
