National Crime Victims' Right Week and National Assault Awareness Month Proclamation

HATTIESBURG, MISS. - Mayor Toby Barker issued a proclamation to the Shafer Center for Crisis Intervention Monday, April 9 at City Hall in Hattiesburg.

Representatives from the Shafer Center, the Domestic Abuse Family Shelter, and Hattiesburg Police Department attended the proclamation in honor of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and National Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

“It means a lot to us to know that the City of Hattiesburg is on-board with us to help us, and to support us in everything that we’re doing to help others and individuals that need a voice in this area,” Advocate, Therapist, and Educator at the Shafer Center for Crisis Intervention Erica Powell said. “It is important to us to recognize those individuals that can’t speak for themselves or sometimes are not allowed to speak for themselves basically. Because they are not aware what’s out there available to them.”

The Shafer Center AHS helped hundreds of men and women cope with the tragedy of sexual assault, homicide, and suicide.
