Governor will call a Special Session Thursday

HATTIESBURG, MISS. - State officials making plans to head to Jackson this Thursday, as governor Phil Bryant took to Twitter to announce plans to call a special session Aug. 23. Officials plan to take up issues surrounding the state's infrastructure, and how they will fund repairs to the state's "roads and bridges."

Recent decisions made by the U.S. Supreme Court should help the state generate more money. State Senator, Joey Fillingane hopes collecting online taxes will help the state fix its infrastructure problems. “[Online tax revenue] has been something that all the states have been waiting on,” Fillingane stated. “The Wayfair decision has now opened the doors for states to actually collect sales taxes off of purchases made over the internet. So, those are additional dollars will be able to help the state with infrastructure spending.” Fillingane believes this could put $200 to $500 million into the state's infrastructure. Lt. Governor, Tate Reeves also mentioned he wants to use money from sports betting to create a bigger infrastructure budget for the state.
